The number of commercial poultry flocks in North America to be struck by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) during the 2022-24 outbreak now exceeds 1,000.
According to information compiled by WATT Global Media, using data from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and state agriculture agencies, the number of commercial flocks to be affected by HPAI in the United States, Canada and Mexico now stands at 1,003. That figure does not include a case recently reported by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) that did not include information concerning flock type or size. The threshold of 1,000 flocks was eclipsed when APHIS reported that HPAI had been confirmed in four commercial flocks in Iowa on December 17. Read more
