Ohio currently has the most commercial egg layers in the U.S. but has had more flocks impacted by avian influenza compared to any other state in 2025. Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the U.S. continue to be rampant, and have caused Iowa, who historically has led the U.S. in housing the most commercial egg layers, to fall to Ohio, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) February 2025 Chicken and Eggs report
