The avian flu outbreak in Argentina in August 2025 halted the country’s chicken exports. However, in less than 45 days, Argentina was declared free of the disease. That being said, not all export markets have been recovered.
China, which, as a matter of fact, reopened to Argentinian exports last May after two years of being closed, is still in negotiations, as are other important export destinations, such as neighboring Chile, the European Union and South Africa.
It is spring in the southern hemisphere, and broilers in Argentina tend to get heavier. Argentina is, actually, a heavy broiler market – around 2.7 kg per bird. Argentinians consumed 48.1 kg of chicken per person per year in 2024. Total meat consumption, including fish, stands at 120 kg per person, quite a large amount.
