The detailed budget proposal newly issued by the Trump administration would trim federal food safety inspection spending by 2.1% while boosting support for state inspection by 23.8% within the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) budget.

The plan is part of the White House’s request for $23 billion in USDA discretionary spending for the 2026 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, representing a cut of 22.6% or $6.7 billion from the ongoing year.

USDA’s 2026 fiscal year budget summary proposes $1.066 billion for federal food safety and inspection — the same level as actually spending in 2024 — a cut of $23 million from the current year.
