The California Poultry Federation (CPF) Annual Conference and Meeting will be held at the Monterey Plaza Hotel in Monterey, CA on Thursday, September 20th. A buffet lunch on the outdoor patio will be held at 11:30 a.m. prior to the Conference. The Board Meeting is Friday, September 21st, beginning at 8:30 a.m., with breakfast for attendees before the meeting at 7:30 a.m.

Conference Speakers

Karen Ross

Appointed Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture on January 12, 2011, by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. Secretary Ross has deep leadership experience in agricultural issues nationally, internationally, and here in California. Prior to joining CDFA, Secretary Ross was chief of staff for U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a position she accepted in 2009. Prior to that appointment, she served as President of the California Association of Winegrape Growers from 1996-2009, and as Vice-President of the Agricultural Council of California from 1989-1996. Before moving to California, Secretary Ross served as Director of Government Relations for the Nebraska Rural Electric Association and as Field Representative for U.S. Senator Edward Zorinsky. Paul Kiecker

Mr. Paul Kiecker was named Acting Administrator for the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) in August 2017. Throughout his 29 years with FSIS, Mr. Kiecker has been committed to a strong public health vision that has guided him to overcome obstacles, identify opportunities for improvement, efficiently manage resources, and achieve food safety objectives to prevent foodborne illness. Dan Walters

Dan Walters has been a journalist for nearly 60 years, spending all but a few of those years working for California newspapers. At one point in his career, at age 22, he was the nation’s youngest daily newspaper editor.
He joined The Sacramento Union’s Capitol bureau in 1975, just as Jerry Brown began his governorship, and later became the Union’s Capitol bureau chief. In 1981, Mr. Walters began writing the state’s only daily newspaper column devoted to California political, economic and social events.
In 1984, he and the column moved to The Sacramento Bee and in 2017, Mr. Walters and his column shifted to CALmatters.org, a non-profit organization devoted to California public policy issues. He has written more than 9,000 articles and his column appears in dozens of California newspapers. Read more

Mike Brown

Mike Brown is president of the National Chicken Council. As president, Brown manages the NCC staff and is responsible for carrying out policies as determined by the Board of Directors.
Previously, Brown was on the staff of the American Meat Institute, where he represented AMI to Congress and the Administration as the organization’s senior vice president for legislative affairs. He joined AMI in May 1995, after serving eight years as a legislative assistant for former Sen. John Warner (R-VA), focusing on agriculture, food safety, labor, immigration, environment, and international trade issues. Brown also previously worked as a legal publication specialist for the Federal Register, where he was responsible for providing information to Congress, federal agencies, trade associations and others on federal regulations and office programs and publications. Tom Super

Tom Super, Senior Vice President of Communications
Super brings 16 years of combined experience in strategic communications, public policy, politics and meat and poultry issues management to NCC’s senior management team. He is responsible for day-to-day media relations, media outreach, social media management and strategic communications planning to supplement the National Chicken Council’s legislative, regulatory and public affairs efforts. Leslee Oden

Leslee Oden is the Vice President of Legislative Affairs at the National Turkey Federation in Washington, D.C.
As Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Leslee is responsible for guiding the federation’s legislative efforts on Capitol Hill and coordinating NTF’s grassroots outreach. She has been with NTF since 2010 as an integral member of the Government Relations team, serving as Legislative Director prior to her new role. In addition to day-to-day legislative duties, she also plays a key role in increasing contributions to TURPAC, NTF’s political action committee. She earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in poultry science from Texas A&M University and is originally from Leona, Texas.
