It’s an age-old question: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? In the case of animal welfare issues, the answer is easy: the egg. But more food companies are turning their attention to chickens, adopting policies intended to improve the lives of the birds used in their products. “Companies have been helping shift the egg industry to cage-free production for several years, and now they’re starting to set policies around how birds in the chicken-meat industry are treated,” said Matthew Prescott, senior director of food policy at the Humane Society of the United States.
