Ag economist urges Congress to begin extensive reform of the Renewable Fuel Standard

The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is broken, but Congress can fix the rule by acting now and opening an inclusive, robust debate that leads to extensive reform," said Dr. Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon, LLC, today at a media briefing with approximately 50 reporters. Dr. Elam presented his remarks on behalf of the National Chicken Council and National Turkey Federation. Congress in 2005 enacted the first RFS which mandated levels of ethanol to be blended with gasoline. In 2007 that ethanol mandate was expanded, and biodiesel was added. Dr. Elam noted in his remarks that 2007 was a game changer, referring to it as a "Hail Mary." "We did not then, and still do not today, have the volume of agricultural raw materials, or the required cellulosic ethanol technology, to meet the 2007 RFS goals," he said. "Nearly six years later, it’s still not a commercial reality. The courts just a few weeks ago ruled this to be the case, as well." Read More

The truth about the Super Bowl ‘Chicken Wing Apocalypse’

So far, 2013 has been a distressing year in chicken news. First, two men allegedly stole 26,000 pounds of chicken wings earlier this month from a storage facility in Georgia. (The filched appetizers are still at large, CBS News reported on Monday morning.) Last week, a report by the National Chicken Council-which announced a 1 percent decrease in chicken production over the course of 2012-spawned online hysteria as football fans across the country fretted that their viewing parties would be bereft of Buffalo wings on Super Bowl Sunday.

USDA to inspect poultry processing plants in China

USDA inspectors are scheduled to visit China soon to inspect poultry processing plants to verify Chinese claims that several of its chicken-processing plants meet U.S. food safety standards, USDA said. Although the People’s Republic of China has wanted to sell its chicken products in the United States since 2006,  China is currently not allowed to import chicken into the United States because of past food safety concerns, avian influenza outbreaks, and previous U.S. congressional opposition.  The country is interested in both processing U.S.-raised birds and exporting the meat and processing and exporting Chinese-raised chickens.
